Wilmington NC Dog Friendly Workout Destinations
A workout is always more fun with a friend, and one friend who's always willing is your dog. Bring your best friend along on your outdoor workout and you'll reap the benefits of good company and a happy, tired pooch.
Take Your Best Friend to a Dog Friendly Beach
The beach is your number-one destination for a pet-friendly workout. Dogs love the wide-open beach strand and many area beaches love dogs.
- Dogs are only allowed on Wrightsville Beach October 1st through March 31st, on a leash only. In Kure Beach, your leashed dog is welcome from Oct. 1 to March 31.
- At Carolina Beach, dogs are welcome Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 on a leash. At Freeman
- Park (the north end of Carolina Beach), dogs must be leashed from March 1st to Oct. 31. The rest of the year (Nov. 1 through Feb. 29) dogs are allowed off leash, but they must remain under voice command and the owner must be within a reasonable distance. Leashed dogs are welcome year-round at Fort Fisher.
- Dogs are allowed on Topsail Beach on a leash from May 15 through Sept. 30. From Oct. 1 to May 14, the dog must be under voice command, but does not have to be on a leash.
- In North Topsail Beach and in Surf City, dogs must be on a leash at all times, year-round.
Take Your Dog for a Walk, Run or Yoga in a Dog Friendly Park
Grab the leash and your dog is off the couch in a flash and ready for a run. Lots of pet-friendly local parks offer trails or leisurely walks to get you and your pooch outdoors for a mutual workout.
- Wallace Park in Carolina Heights offers a grassy walk along Burnt Mill Creek.
- Hugh MacRae Park has paved trails and a pond for ruffling the feathers of local ducks.
- Greenfield Lake Park is about four miles around. If that's too much, just take a stroll along any stretch and backtrack when you're ready. Keep old of your dog; there are exciting turtles and also alligators in the lake.
- Behind UNCW, find the Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve and Ev-Henwood Nature Preserve. These are great places for a scenic run with your dog.
- Carolina Beach State Park has a number of trails and large sand dunes to climb.
- Wrightsville Beach Loop is a popular walk with lots of canine (and human) company.
